John T. Chakeris

John T. Chakeris is a 1994 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law. He is a member of the South Carolina Bar and its Construction Bar Section, Charleston County Bar Association, and is admitted to practice in the Federal District Court.  His opinions and legal analysis in the field of construction defect litigation have been sought by national and local news organizations including ABC News Nightline. He has been involved in obtaining well in excess of 100 million dollars in recoveries for his clients.

Mr. Chakeris has served as counsel in a number of high profile cases that have shaped the construction defect laws of South Carolina benefitting homeowners over the last two decades. These cases include allowing construction defect class actions in single family construction when defendants claimed there could be none, declaring D.R. Horton’s arbitration clause contained in its sales contract unenforceable due to one-sided and oppressive contractual terms unfavorable to the buyer, and interpreting general contractor commercial general liability policy provisions favorably for the building owner.

The Lawyer Mentoring Program of the South Carolina Supreme Court has recognized Mr. Chakeris for his commitment to its program for young lawyer development. He has also been recognized by Super Lawyers as an elite practitioner in the field of construction law.
